Effective October 1, 2025, MPDL Services gGmbH was renamed DEAL Open Access Services (DEAS) gGmbH.

Why the renaming?
The change of name reflects the structural development of our company: since 2022, the
non-profit limited liability company is no longer supported solely by the Max Planck Society, but by a broad circle
of leading German scientific institutions. Since 2022, the shareholders of DEAL Open Access
Services (DEAS) gGmbH have been

  • the German Research Foundation (31.25%),
  • the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (31.25%),
  • the Foundation for the Promotion of the German Rectors' Conference (11%),
  • the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research (8.5%),
  • the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (5%),
  • the Leibniz Association (5%),
  • the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (3%),
  • the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ (3%) and
  • the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) (2%).

The new name also emphasizes its independence from the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL),
which operates exclusively as an internal service facility for the Max Planck Society.

What does this mean for our partners?
All existing contracts and agreements remain valid and unchanged. Contact details and address
also remain the same. Only invoices will be issued under the new company name in future.
